I Miss My Old Cat

I hate that even I have to admit to this but I have come to accept the widely known fact that cats are smarter than dogs. This has come to my full attention by the pathetic acts of my dog Rocky.

Having been a dog and cat owner at different points in my life I have always known that I am in fact a dog person and would much rather own a dog over a cat. But it has come to my attention that there is something wrong with my dog.…namely that he’s coward.

After much effort and many a bug spray every once in awhile in New York you are bound to see a cockroach or two. You get used to it, its really no big deal, but they are still disgusting, ugly, evil little things that should be killed at any given opportunity. So last night Rocky found a cockroach in my bedroom and preceeded to whimper - not growl - but whimper…as if in fear. Seeing what it was I put Rocky right in front of it and told him to be a manly dog and kill it and he proceeded to whimper and literally back away from the cockroach. In the end I had to kill it while he hid in the closet on the other side of the room.

Now my issue is that I NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD TO KILL IT MYSELF IF I HAD A CAT. Because cats are smart, and bitchy, and vindictive. A cat would have killed it, played with its dead body, and then eaten it. But I have a dog, and my dog is a cowardly little girl.…I am a very disspointed parent right now.

I'm sorry your dog's a pussy (pun fully intended). Yeah, my cat, Max, thinks they're toys. He bats them around the house until he gets bored adn then meows at me or David to get rid of it becuase he can't be bothered. Apparently he has more important things to do. Like give himself a tongue bath or sleep 23 hours out of the day. ;-)

my cat would definately have caught it, played with it and either eaten it or walked away in sheer boredom like any proper cat....however, i can't really place him in the smart cat category. tito, bless him, still hasn't figured out how to cover his shit in the litterbox. instead of covering it with the kitty litter like all normal cats, he habitually scrapes and paws at the vinyl floor outside his litterbox and can't figure out why it doesn't work.

All Hail Ribbon! (although I SUPPOSE you could have been talking about Darcy) My sweetie. He's good at catching things, or at least he used to be. He is getting old and slow and I don't think there are any mice or cockroaches around here to catch. However he is still great at training me. The past week he's been meowing at me non stop and he doesn't want to be petted, doesn't want wet food, doesn't need to go out, I've figured out that he apparently wants his treats which I've run out of. And what did I do today but buy his treats. Now he's trying to train me to give him some any time he walks in from outside. I think it's starting to work. He's a demanding little thing.

it's ok adrienne, you are brave enough for you and your pet of choice combined. so don't go over to the dark side! stay with the forces of good and those who love dogs!

No! Come to the dark side! Cats rule and dogs drool.
Sassy, the cat with Sally Field's voice said so ... to that other dog, with Michael J. Fox's voice.

Well, some cats also drool. Mine did. But he didn't shy away from torturing an insect or two for personal enjoyment. And that's what counts.

yeah, anyone who has lived with ribbon can blow that "cats don't drool" myth right out of the water...

i love that movie!

i read the book for the first time when i was living on a houseboat. good times. i wish i lived on a houseboat now. but not on the delta as i did for that one week. it's nice and all, but give me a real body of water any day of the week.

my cats don't drool. and they don't run into walls as my dog used to do either.
